When will my child lose their first baby tooth?

When will my child lose their first baby tooth?  When will their permanent teeth come in?

This question again has a lot of variability.  In general, children will get their first permanent tooth around age six.  A baby tooth is not lost for the addition of this tooth to the mouth. This first adult tooth actually comes in behind the last baby tooth in the mouth.  These permanent teeth are called the “six-year molars because they come in normally around age six.  Around this time they may also have loose teeth in the front.  Usually between ages 6-8 years old the front top and bottom teeth (called incisors) will become loose and are replaced by their permanent counterparts.  There may be no particular order in terms of what comes out when.

Here is a guide of the general time frames in which permanent teeth come in and baby teeth come out:

5-7 years old

  • The permanent 6 year molars come in behind the last baby tooth.
  • The front bottom lower teeth (central and lateral incisors) may come out and their permanent counterparts come in.
  • Occasionally the upper front teeth (central incisors may also come out and be replaced by their permanent counterparts.

7-8 years old

  • The upper front teeth and the teeth beside them (central and lateral incisors) if they haven’t already done so.

8-10 years old

  • The “baby” molars on the top and bottom come out and are replaced with their permanent counterparts (first and second premolars/bicuspids)

11-13 years old

  • Baby canines on the top and bottom come out and are replaced with the permanent canines.
  • The permanent second molars come in behind the last already existing permanent molar.
